According to written accounts his army had ridden and marched unopposed through a dozen abandoned villages, pillaging and looting as they went, since the former occupants had long fled the invaders' advance. That is until they arrived at Loxhule. The commander halted his troops and beheld a dirt crusted waif of a girl; perhaps 8 sols of age, barefooted, in a threadbare dress, and wearing a rough-cut cebuck hide vest. She held a short piece of tree branch in one hand, and was surrounded by hundreds of cats which sat in ranks facing the approaching soldiers. It is said that she spoke, but a single sentence, and the commander ordered the retreat of his entire force back across the border of the kingdom they had invaded. | |||
