You fear me, I can tell, but what is there to fear? Here amongst the Ru-Pani, I am free, to be who and what I am, to use the gifts given to me to live in the grace of the creator. Do you fear my freedom, or what true freedom would mean for you? - Cal Rurezios

Personality

Cal seems cold or aloof when meeting strangers, but this is more because he is introverted and tends to focus on his internal concerns. Once he knows a person he opens up more. He has a keen wit, and is a good conversationalist about a great many topics. He likes to learn new things, but tends to always apply them to his magic and focus on water. He is open to questions about his profession, but is suspicious and withholds what he considers secrets, or dangerous knowledge. He will not betray the guild, and while openly practices magic, does not use his powers to elevate his status.

The child was beyond the reach of our fastest swimmers, and with the wind pushing our vessels forward, would have been lost to the waves in moments. I had no choice but to reveal my magic, and so I drew the child up from the swells to safety. Amongst any people but the Ru-Pani, I believe, I would have been called a witch. Even though I saved the child, the fear and mistrust would have turned them against me. I had fled such persecution to join the sea nomads, but had kept my secret to myself out of my own mirrored, and misplaced fears. I have since made a place for myself. I am considered an important member of the vu s'vin, but not any more so than the others who lack my particular talents. I have no desire to become a leader, or to rule over them; that runs counter to our ways.

Reef Walker Vu S'vin, Torcastan Sea
History
Cal was born in Faham, a small coastal village of Aralia, and was taken in by a local sorcerer and apprenticed in both the arcane and the mundane trade of his master. He learned the skills of a salter, but lacked real interest in the trade. Focusing more on the arcane arts, he became a moderately capable sorcerer and joined the sea nomads to avoid persecution by the church when witch hunters came for his master in 390 YG. He is now an established member of the Reef Walker Vu S'vin, a moderate sized flotilla of the Ru-Pani.
Magic
Cal was given the name Rurezios - Like the Sea by the Ru-Pani whom he joined, for the ease at which he took to a life upon the waves. Later when he used his spells to save a drowning child, and again to save the flotilla from a particularly destructive gale he earned the respect of his new family. Since that time he has ceased to hide his profession.
Cal was trained in the use of water magic. He knows most basic spells of his convocation, common spells any apprentice would be taught, and a few useful air and spirit affinity spells as well.

I have used my power to protect the flotilla from storms from time to time, usually by steering winds in more favourable directions. We'd never stay out at sea if storms such as you describe were coming. The senior pilots among my vu s'vin are better than I at predicting foul weather. My mastery is by no means as great as your seem to think. I would be taking a mortal risk should my magic fail or escape my control fighting a full tempest. When the vu s'vin stops at a port I most often choose to remain aboard my boat. while the Ru-Pani protect my secret, they couldn't help me if I were caught ashore by witch hunters. That said, I do have some business with my guild from time to time, that requires in-person attendance, so I take precautions when I must.
