It is said that one evening he had cut his lip upon the rim of a wine goblet, and immediately imposed a luxury tax upon the sale of glassware throughout the kingdom. His stated intent, when questioned on the matter, was to limit the availability of glass drinking vessel so none of his subjects might suffer similar injury to his own. The effect of the tax was two-fold: It drove down the prices of glassware in the country, as lower prices meant less tax was charged. Some savvy merchants went so far as to sell overpriced glass containers of water or wine and let the customer keep the vessel for free in an attempt to skip paying the tax entirely. It also drove up demand for alternative vessels causing an upsurge in the pottery trade through Tabras. The tax was repealed in 292 YG by the king's daughter and heir, Efoasa Vylan, but still had lasting effects on the economy which persisted for several decades.

Jalen Vylan was a broad shouldered man with rich chestnut hair in his youth, and hazel eyes. His nose was crooked, and he had a notable scar on his left cheek. He wore a braided beard, and being the king dressed in fine robes and surcoat.

Personality

The mad king was described as a intelligent and quick witted man in his youth, however as he suffered with mental illness, his mind got progressively worse through his later decades. He was often distracted by ephemera which only he could see. He believed in faeries which he claims to have made a pact with for himself and his descendants to maintain a peace between the two peoples. This madness seemed to manifest fleeting apparitions of faerie folk and other weirdness in his presence. Despite his delusions he was still known to be a capable statesman and warrior in his own right.

Jalen Vylan - the mad king - the eighth monarch of Tabras (275 -- 292 YG) suffered a form of delusional reality, it is recorded that all sorts of strange objects or beings would appear and disappear in his presence. Some claim these were the demons that tormented him, and the cause of his madness rather than a symptom. A few scholars of the arcane believe he may have been talented in the psionic path of phantasm, and manifested imagery from his delusional beliefs unknowingly. All that is known is they stopped occurring upon his death.
