Bastaan has blue eyes and auburn hair streaked with grey, he has his long beard in three braids, and shaves the sides of his head, leaving his hair in a single long braid.

He dresses as expected for a Iskandean sailor, high boots, linen pants, and a woollen tunic, with a few items of jewellery indicative of his wealth.

Bastaan has a keen and inquisitive mind. He enjoys his time at sea, and wishes to discover the mysteries of the universe. He is open minded to new ideas if they can be debated, tested, and refined. He dislikes dogmatic approaches to knowledge. Despite being a man of science, Bastaan is still a devout follower of the Goddess.

History

Bastaan Dar Ming is the third cousin, twice removed, of Alaric Dar Ming, the Khur of Iskander.

Scholar

Bastaan has spent a lifetime studying the stars, planets, other astronomical entities, and their movements. As such he has applied his knowledge to become a excellent ship's pilot, but his true love is the vault of the heavens and the mysteries it holds. He is a strong proponent of the Dance of Rings astronomical theory, due to the mathematical predictions of movement which are provable. Bastaan has personal theories about other phenomena like comets and meteors, but without the means to fly up to see them in person, can only speculate as to their nature.

The planets are each suspended on invisible rings, like a single stone set upon a band of precious metal. The rings are all concentric, surrounding the sun, like the rings of a tree stump. The smaller rings spin much faster than the larger ones, due to the shorter circumference. As the spin the rings wobble, like a coins slowing down after being made to spin on a table. This up and down motion of the wobble accounts for the perceived changes in the height of the sun during the different seasons. All this can be observed over time using fixed points of observation and keeping good records of the position of the sun, and other planets throughout the year.
