- These monks believe that the clergy should set an example for others by living a life of austerity, rich in faith not material gains. As such they live simple lives, without the finery, jewels and other adornments. Their name comes from the practice of self-blinding when taking their vows. The monks would rather dwell in darkness forever than continue to see their church and its gross display of material wealth.

- The Black Brotherhood is a small breakaway sect of the church of Ryla. These monks intentionally blinded themselves in protest of the accumulation of vast wealth and excessive displays of opulence. Ostracized for their beliefs from within the church, they departed to dwell amongst the Qulani of Black Ridge Common.
- The Qulani, familiar with low to no light existence, have taught the monks ways of compensating for their self-inflicted disability. The monks have adopted some practices from their host community, including scarification, tactile communication, and even more close knit communal living.
